Madhya Pradesh, located in the heart of India, is one of the most blessed states of India in terms of natural resources including rich and diverse forests; it is also known for its abundance of natural resources, especially the diversity of forests and wildlife. Madhya Pradesh is endowed with rich forest wealth. Area-wise Madhya Pradesh has the largest forest cover in the country. Out of a total geographical area of 3,08,252 Sq.Kms. of the State, 31% of the area is classified as forest area. The Indian sub-continent itself is a mega biodiversity region. India is divided into 16 Agro-climatic zones, out of which 11 are represented in Madhya Pradesh. This explains the range of soil and climatic conditions prevailing in this state. Therefore, most of the tropical medicinal herbs can be grown in Madhya Pradesh. The abundant natural resources play an important role in fulfilling the livelihood needs of 4 million people dwelling in and around forests.
